Types of Dies We Design and Build
ATD designs and builds tooling for metal stamping programs that require consistency, durability and long-term production performance.
Progressive Dies
Progressive dies move strip material through multiple stations, with each station performing a specific operation. They are often used for high-volume parts that require speed and repeatability.
Transfer Dies
Transfer dies move individual parts from one station to the next. They are a strong fit for larger, deeper or more complex components.
Compound Dies
Compound dies perform multiple cutting operations in a single press stroke. They can help produce flat components with strong dimensional accuracy.
Draw Dies
Draw dies form flat sheet metal into deeper or shaped components. They are used when a part requires depth, contour or more complex forming.

ATD's CAD Expertise Produces Big Cost Savings for Automotive Manufacturer
Learn how ATD saved an automotive manufacturer hundreds of thousands of dollars by using CAD software to pinpoint a failure and design a new part.
“We were able to tell them that if they went down the path they’ve used for these other tools they’ve built and are running, this part is going to fail. Right up front, in the very early stages of the laying out of this tool, we were able to get that in front of them — before steel was ordered, before die was set, before a lot of costs were accrued.”

Tool and Die FAQ
What is a progressive die vs. a transfer die?
A progressive die performs multiple operations as strip material moves through a series of stations within the same die. A transfer die moves individual parts from station to station, making it a strong fit for larger, deeper or more complex components.
How does ATD handle tool maintenance and repair?
ATD supports tool maintenance and repair through structured inspection, troubleshooting and in-house tooling expertise. Our team evaluates wear, part quality and production performance to help keep tooling reliable and production-ready.
Can ATD reverse-engineer a die without original drawings?
Yes. ATD can evaluate existing tooling and part requirements to support reverse engineering when original drawings are unavailable. Our team reviews the die, stamped components and production needs to determine the best path forward.
How does ATD's IATF 16949 QMS apply to tooling builds?
ATD’s IATF 16949 quality management system supports disciplined process control, documentation and continuous improvement throughout tooling builds. This helps ensure tooling is developed with production quality, repeatability and customer requirements in mind.
