Precision Metal Prototype Manufacturing with Production-Grade Quality
ATD builds functional metal prototypes for form, fit and function testing before final tooling and production. Depending on the project, prototypes may be machined, hand-fabricated or produced with soft tooling.
Typical quantities range from 1 to 500 pieces with turnaround times of two to four weeks. Each prototype is built to represent the final part and follows the same IATF 16949-certified Quality Management System as production components.
Engineering-Led Prototype Design: 3D Modeling, Simulation and Build
Customers rely on ATD’s engineering team to transform early concepts and CAD data into functional prototype stamped metal parts. Our engineers review part geometry, material requirements, tolerances, assembly conditions and anticipated production volumes before recommending the most appropriate prototype method.
3D modeling helps our team evaluate the component before fabrication begins. This process can identify potential forming challenges, dimensional conflicts or areas where a design may be difficult to manufacture consistently. Simulation and engineering review also help customers make informed adjustments before investing in final production tooling.
Our engineering team designs every prototype from the ground up using SolidWorks and Siemens NX.

ATD's CAD Expertise Produces Big Cost Savings for Automotive Manufacturer
Learn how ATD saved an automotive manufacturer hundreds of thousands of dollars by using CAD software to pinpoint a failure and design a new part.
“We were able to tell them that if they went down the path they’ve used for these other tools they’ve built and are running, this part is going to fail. Right up front, in the very early stages of the laying out of this tool, we were able to get that in front of them — before steel was ordered, before die was set, before a lot of costs were accrued.”
