What Is Design for Manufacturability?

Design for manufacturability, or DFM, is an engineering practice that optimizes part design for efficient, cost-effective production. ATD’s engineering team applies DFM principles early in the product development cycle to identify potential stamping challenges, reduce material waste and minimize tooling revisions before steel is ever cut.

A DFM review may uncover issues involving bend radii, material flow, hole placement, tolerance requirements, part orientation or the number of forming operations required. Addressing these concerns during the design stage can reduce tooling complexity, improve press performance and lower scrap rates throughout production.

For procurement engineers and product teams, DFM also creates greater confidence in project timing and cost. Instead of reacting to problems after tooling has been built, ATD helps customers make informed design decisions before those problems affect launch schedules or production budgets.
